Freshwater carp arrive at the Playa Canina, Bolnuevo

A number of very large freshwater carp were found dead yesterday, the 9th of October, in the “brackish” water that connects the Playa Canina (Bolnuevo) with the sea.

Brackish water is a natural mixture that is saltier than freshwater but less salty than seawater, so the fish would have struggled to survive.

According to local sources, two days before this these fish were swimming happily in the water, having arrived during the recent storms.

They probably originated from somewhere near Lorca, and came down the rambla in fresh water, passing through Camposol and Mazarrón Town. The rambla is a “dead end” at the moment, so they were totally trapped.

Often this stretch of rambla and the sea join up, but sadly at the moment they are completely separated, as the beach is in between, so the fish could not escape. It appears that a lack of oxygen is what actually killed them. It is very sad to see.
