It’s July and half way through the year; the temperature is rising and the whole Spanish nation is heading for Mazarrón! – well it feels that way but they are all heading for the coastal areas – packed beaches and restaurants along with impossible traffic! Hey it’s just for six weeks – businesses make 90% of their annual profit at this time and the first week of September they will all be gone and us coastal residents will have it all back for ourselves. Just allow double the time to do anything!
With IPTV being the way to watch UK TV (Satellite is generally finished) we are often being asked which is the best ISP (internet service provider) one of the fibre companies or Starlink. Starlink is really good stable relatively fast internet and we have no hesitation to say use it where “good” fibre is not available. It can be used in any location – way out in the countryside, up a mountain or in the city centre – antenna location is critical but generally a position can be found. If you are using an over the air system (an antenna on your roof with a wire coning down to the router) and fibre is not available then swap to Starlink – probably a bit more expensive but infinitely better internet.
Then we have fibre and the choice of a number of providers which most urban locations will now have. Fibre is not simply fibre with equal technical specifications – it can vary. As with, it seems, everything these days fibre adverts are price led but the old saying “you get what you pay for” really does apply. The cheaper end of the market use cheap convoluted routings and cheap equipment resulting in poor stability. Watching TV by internet is hugely demanding on it; far more than emailing, shopping or general surfing – if you have to wait a millisecond for, say, Ryanair to respond so what but when watching TV that will result in a blip and several blips will result in unwatchable TV. The big three suppliers – Movistar, Vodafone and Orange generally are not price led but quality led so they are not the cheapest but they are the best quality internet providers – it really is worth the little extra. Remember that your local supplier pushing their low prices cannot get you to, say London, where the website you are trying to look at is based – they have to feed into the infrastructure that is run by the big three.
For internet don’t be led by just price – quality is important – not all are the same.
