Travel advisory: Spain general strike on 11 November

Spain is due to hold a 24 hour general strike on Wednesday 11 November, called by the main trade unions CCOO and UGT, together with several others, over housing costs, wages and working conditions. If you, or family and friends visiting you, are travelling around that date, it is worth being aware of some possible disruption.

How travel could be affected

If airport and transport staff take part, there could be delays to airport ground services, baggage handling and some flights, along with possible disruption to trains and local transport. Importantly, airports are not expected to close, and most flights are still expected to operate, but delays and some cancellations are possible.

The minimum services, which are the legal minimum level of service that must still run during a strike, had not been confirmed at the time of writing, so the scale of any disruption is still uncertain and will depend on how many workers take part.

If you are travelling on or around 11 November

  • Check directly with your airline for the latest on your flight.
  • Check Aena, the airport operator, for airport updates (aena.es).
  • If you are travelling by train, check Renfe (renfe.com).
  • Allow extra time to get to the airport or station.

Things may well become clearer closer to the date, once participation and minimum services are confirmed. We will share any further updates as we have them.
